About Kevin
Kevin Murar is an avid athlete in the local Big Island community. In addition to competing in the half ironmans in Hawaii, he has also podiumed in the Lavaman Triathlons.
Before moving to Kona, Kevin lived in Sun Valley, Idaho where he raced pro/expert mountain bikes in the Northwest. He also competed in back country duathlons which consisted of a mountain bike race and a back country run with combined times. In 2006 Kevin achieved the Idaho champion for duathlons.
As a road bike racer Kevin has consistently placed in the top of the fields with podiums in several stage races. He is currently a Category 3 road bike racer. In 2009, he finished 8th in the Oahu Dick Evans 112 mile road race. This road race was the original Ironman bicycle course.
In 2007, Kevin qualified for and competed in the Xterra World Championships in Maui. The Xterra series is a back country triathlon with mountain biking and trail running.
He has also done various running races throughout the years. In 2007, he was 2nd in his age group for the Kona Half Marathon. In 2009 he was first in his age group in the Hilo Marathon, and in 2008 he was 10th overall at the Volcano Marathon. Also, in 2007 he won the Dry Creek Backcountry half marathon in Boise, Idaho.
In 2010, Kevin qualified and ran the Boston Marathon.
In addition to competitive sports, Kevin enjoys skiing, fishing, and white water kayaking. He has safety kayaked for guided trips on the Futaleufu River in Chile and the Salmon River (river of no return). He has also white water kayaked throughout the United States and all over the world including Costa Rica, Australia, and New Zealand.
The goal for this ironman is to keep it simple: Swim consistent, bike consistent, and not peak on the run into the last couple of miles. But my most important goal is to see my wife and two children at the finish line.
